Educational Plan for Master Degree in
Leather Chemistry and Engineering
I. Educational Objective
Through the study of the M.S. degree, the students are able to master the professional knowledge and corresponding fundamental techniques of the discipline, develop skills in the independent scientific research, and are trained to become the talents for technology and management in Leather Chemistry and Engineering. The students are trained to command one foreign language for reading foreign literature and writing papers.
II. Research Orientations
A. New Leather Technology and Green Leather Tanning Engineering
On the sustainable development of leather industry, to study the basic theory of leather processing and clean production technology, and to develop leather clean production technology and various kinds of new leather.
B. Collagen Science and Tanning Theory
Research is related to animal protein chemistry and applications which Studies on microscopic properties of collagen morphology, molecular motion and dynamics behavior, rheological behavior of materials of collagen and the state of aggregation of various special macro performances, principle of leather chemicals and references on protein.
C. Leather Chemicals
Study on the role of leather chemicals and references on protein principle, the relationship between structure and properties, synthetic methods, the research and development of new products.
III. Educational System and Duration
The normative time for M.S. degree is 3 years and the maximum time to degree is 5 years (including suspension of schooling, remain enrolled , deferred graduation), but not less than 2 years of study at school and not less than 1 year of dissertation research ( from starting thesis proposal to finishing paper defending).
IV. Credit and Curriculum
Postgraduate courses are divided into degree and non-degree courses which adopt a credit system. Degree courses are divided into common required course, specialized course and frontier seminar. Common required course every 18 to 32 hours meter 1 credit, specialized course every 16 hours meter 1 credit, experimental classes every 32 hours meter 1 credit. The total credits required are not less than 31 credits.
V. Mid-term Screening
Mid-term screening should be carried out for summarizing the study achievement since the postgraduate entrance evaluation; discovering and solving the problems in the process of cultivation, making the graduate smoothly entered the stage of essay writing, ensuring the quality of postgraduate cultivation. The mid-term screening should be completed before the twelfth weeks in the third semester and implemented under the specific regulations according to the master's degree candidate screening measures of Qilu University of Technology. .
VI. Thesis-writing
Thesis writing, as an important part of the graduate program, demonstrates students’ ability to do scientific research and hands-on work. M.S. candidates should complete thesis independently under the direction of their supervisors. The thesis should adequately reflect that the graduate student has met all the requirements set in the graduate program. Thesis research work time (from starting thesis proposal to finishing paper defending) shall not be less than one year. The detailed requirements are in the "The Provisions for Master Candidates to Apply Academic Degree of Qilu University of Technology (Third Edition) ".
VII. The Other Parts
1. Teaching practice or the practice of scientific research or social practice. Choose one among the teaching practice, research practice and social practice.
2. Academic activities
Academic activities include two aspects: (1) graduate students give academic reports in seminar or report meeting at least 2 times; (2) graduate students listen to the frontier academic reports given by experts of this discipline or related disciplines at least 10 times. Both the two aspects are required for any graduate student. Each graduate student shall fill in a form about the academic activities .The form should be approved by the advisor and the department and then the form will be transferred to the postgraduate division.
VIII. Research Requirement
Prior to application for thesis defense, graduate students are required to complete at least one of the following findings:
1. A paper of the graduate student should be published by a magazine collected by SCI or EI, and the graduate student should be the first author or the mentor as the first author but the graduate student as the second. The unit of the first author and the student be signed by Qilu University of Technology, and the content of the paper must be related to the dissertation.
2. As the main researchers (top three) get more than one scientific/technological awards with the level of no less than bureau level, and the award certificate shall prevail.
3. As the main researchers (top two) get at least one authorized invention patent and the content of the patent must be related to the dissertation.
