To Learn for Use

    As the results of CET-4 in June, 2011 indicating, 39 students from Chemical Engineering and Technology pilot class passed and only one failed for the problem of his earphone. This is miracle because students prepared for this exam for only 4 months. The good performance attributes to the innovative training model and curriculum system reconstruction.
    The students of Chemical Engineering and Technology pilot class have changed a lot in their theory of learning in last 4 months. Yu-E Li, the deputy Party secretary of the School of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Engineering said, “Students are actively involved in learning and are more confident than before. They have a higher level of planning. The perfect performance in CET-4 has stimulated the initiative. Next, we will develop the innovation courses to unlock the potential of students and enable them make good use of every day. I believe that the students’ parents, the college and the society will be satisfied with our graduates.”
    Rong-Mei Wang, who scored 560 points in CET-4, said sincerely, “I’m very lucky to be a member of the pilot class and I am full of confidence for my study in future.”
Initiative in learning is critical to the change from “to learn for passing the test” to “to learn for use”.
    “I learn English not only for the test, I think English is a tool to present my opinions and to using resources in English”, said Yuan-Zheng Guo, who plans for further study in Europe. Guo feels the useful, effective and advanced curriculum system deeply. She pointed out that the college arranged courses same to her plan. She scored 605 points in CET-4 and improved her listening, speaking, reading and writing English obviously. She said happily, “The pilot class inserts ideal wings to me.”
A longing for knowledge is the motivation for learning. Compared to her classmates who have a clear plan, Min Wang is swinging between study for acquiring master degree and pursuing a job. However, she told us that study was important for her whether she studied abroad or was employed and she enjoys the hard study. Wang said, “The more knowledge I acquire, the more chances I will get in the future. I’m very happy and satisfied to obtain more knowledge.”
    Changes in learning attitude directly contributed to the shift in the learning atmosphere. All the students not merely compete but also cooperate. Qing Wang said: “Everyone is studying hard to improve, if you don’t, you will fall behind.” Study commissary said he was enjoying the learning atmosphere with more communication, help and competition.
  Tian-Xiao Zhang and Long Liu, who are the counselor and head-teacher of the class respectively, feel rather excited, “I forced students to study in the past but now they are active. I’m pleased with the change. ” For six months, the two down-to-earth teachers give all their energy to the pilot class with responsibility. The good performance of this class is closely related to their instruction. Even a little of improvement is a reward for the two young teachers.
The relevant departments and colleges also gave a high priority to the innovative training model and reconstruction of the curriculum system. They made a careful and proper arrangement of education plan, teachers, teaching conditions and management. The School of Foreign Languages endeavored to ensure the English teaching and learning of the pilot class. In order to improve the student's enthusiasm, School of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Engineering hold meetings to know clearly how the students think about the pilot class. Moreover, students gave their suggestions to the education plan and other related issues.
    Wan-Yong Ma, who is the Director of Education Office, told us, “The purpose of innovative training model and reconstruction of the curriculum system is to cultivate the application-oriented talents with international vision.”
    Feng Ma, deputy dean of the School of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Engineering told us our university established the “Three categories, multi-module” curriculum system according to the requirement of society and employment demand. Good start of English and computer education guarantees the next professional courses.
    Students from this class are studying actively. Chuan-Jiang Liu, monitor of this class, said: “We will study together with the freshman in the evening lessons to improve their learning ability.”
